Max is 2

Birthdays are so much fun when you are young! We celebrated #2 today with Max. I wanted to cry as he sat in his little blue chair and opened his gifts. The baby is quickly being left behind - he was acting so grown up! It really freaked me out - here is my "Mimi's boy" acting like a little man, although his favorite word is still NO. It was so adorable when we would ask "who's birthday is it Max?"- he would say Melmo. His favorite character is Elmo from Sesame Street, he actually got to go backstage and meet him at Sesame Street on Ice a couple of weeks ago. He really enjoyed the party and even took time to call Uncle Adam and Aunt Salena and chat for a few minutes:) Can you see the 'sleepy eyes' in the last pic? He was wore out - time for a nap!

Heavy Heart

This is quite a depressing post and I am trying to find something uplifting to include. My heart is heavy today for my brother Brian, his wife Sue and their kids Jacob and Rebecca - as they will be attending the funeral of her cousin, Sgt. David Smith, a Marine who died from injuries incurred in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan. Then I get a phone call from Adam - who's close friend Darin is in Afghanistan, he has been confined to base work and now they are being sent out into the heart of the fighting in Marjah. Adam's unit is scheduled to deploy in January 2011 - this probably won't affect him because he is scheduled for discharge that summer. I don't think he will re-enlist :) That would be the uplifting part!! Why do our children have to fight and die - I guess war will be a part of life as long as evil exists.
Jimmy Stewart from the 1965 movie Shenandoah;

I don’t even know what to say to you
I’d like to know who’s winning the war.
The undertakers are winning the war.
The politicians they talk about it and glorify it.
The old men talk about it and they say we need it.
The young soldiers – well they just want to go home.

Cookbooks

Well this is a funny one - I LOVE cookbooks, but I can't seem to find the time right now to try new recipes very often. And of course the favorite is the family cookbook with Grandma's picture on the front. So I just continue to gather them for the day when I do have the time. It seems that when I like something I can't like it "just a little" which in turn has made me a collector of many, many things. One thing for sure when I find a recipe I like, I love to share it. I also appreciate all of my recipe guru friends who share their finds with me. I'm sure in the future you will see some on here.

Memories of Summer

I can't think of anything better to do on a dreary Monday, with the bad weather and I have some weird kind of flu bug, than to think of fond memories from last summer. I called it "Back to Nature" year we had some amazing experiences; had a honey bee swarm move into the crab apple tree only 10 feet from back porch. Raymond and I followed a nest of robins from the day the momma robin laid those pretty blue eggs through the day they flew the coop :) Had a beautiful butterfly who visited my hanging basket daily. We had every type of wild critter on the porch and managed to catch a couple with the camera. Wonderful time in the garden - it is so much fun grabbing something from the freezer or can cupboard that was created in our own back yard. It was also the summer we got our pool (my kids think the grandkids are terribly spoiled) and no one had more fun than hubby and Raymond.

My Grandparents

Wow - it is so hard to believe that they aren't here anymore. Do we ever stop missing them? Surely not. Grandpa left us in 1997, he had so many amazing qualities I hardly know where to start. What made an impression on me was how hard he worked - at his job and on the farm. There were just things that you knew about him and they were not going to change; like what a devoted family man he was- family needs came first, that when you sat at their dinner table you were going to leave full. He knew hunger and no one, family or other, would leave the table without a full tummy. The way he handled his money. His ability to be content in his circumstances. His faith was something - nothing kept him from church. I remember him kneeling in prayer at his bedside at night. An amazing testimony to all. The greatest impression he left on me was the dignity he showed during the ultimate grief, the loss of a child- his youngest son Dick. Sure he cried, and I know how he mourned (usually alone in the barn) but he bore that grief and never let it alter his faith or love for those of us left. The greatest story I ever heard about him was from my Great-aunt Sarah Knight, she said during the lean years following the depression, being the oldest of eleven children, Grandpa would wait at mealtime until each one of his brothers and sisters had their food before he would eat to make sure there was enough to go around. Wonderful memories of Grandpa - Oh and I don't want to forget these words, "goodnight Sherry and don't forget to say your prayers."

We had Grandma for almost another ten years after Grandpa passed. And memories just rush through my mind like a kaleidoscope. How full of life Grandma was - the family joke was "if there is a car going by and they stop for just a moment Grandma will hop in" she loved to travel and try new things. Grandma had the same work ethic and convictions as Grandpa had, but when I think memories of Grandma, they almost always include cooking. I will never have a homemade noodle that compares. And oh how she could bake!! Cookies, buns, my wedding cake - along with most of the other Grand kids. There are two family cookbooks dedicated to her memory, I think that says it all. I believe the most amazing quality Grandma demonstrated to me was her ability to make any person feel special and loved. She always had a smile, hug, word of advice - whatever it might be that you needed - it was available. She cooked and baked for all of us and could throw the most amazing meals together when unexpected company would come - almost effortlessly!! I was blessed to be able to spend a good deal of time with her during the last years of her life and will always be thankful for the lessons learned - she was one of those people who went through life full steam ahead and was always willing to try something new, oh how I yearn to walk in her shoes.

Stars at Home

I decided to look around and check out my home and see what tickles my fancy - I have several recurring themes; scripture, candles, coffee mugs, wooden signs, teapots, throw pillows ..... but nothing seemed to appear as often as the stars - hence the photo collage which shows several of them. My family room is done in an Americana theme so most stars are there. They do show up in other rooms too. What is so special about stars, I guess they signify hope- in our deepest darkest moments we need visual aids to realign our thoughts and I think the star is perfect. It led the wise men to Jesus so it can certainly lead us to the light.

Pencil Tree

This year I am back into decorating my pencil tree. The crocheted hearts are from a gift shop in Cook Forest but the rest is dollar store items. My family thinks I get a little crazy about this stuff but I tell them - humor me, I'm your mother. (So now you know where my blog title comes from.) Next comes St. Patty's Day - Good thing I am Irish!

Blue Monday ....

That is what they call this day each year. It is almost always a bad weather day. Most people realize they spent way too much money on Christmas (yep, I feel the guilt) and the next paycheck is too far away (aren't they always lol) and no one feels like working - so there we have it "Blue Monday". Now it is my duty to fight the blues .... and count my blessings - count them one by one...

Grandsons- Oh My!

What can be said about grand kids. It is something that cannot be described, like someone who has never tasted ice cream, you have to personally experience to comprehend the wonder. Joy is the word that always comes to mind when I think of Ray and Max. When I drop Ray's snacks off at kindergarten and I see his eyes light up when he notices me, or they pull in the driveway and as soon as the door is open we can hear Max, "Mimi, Mimi, Mimi, MIMI" and he just gets louder until I get to the door. I have often wondered why your own children don't love you like this - it is what makes the grandparent-child relationship so special. To anyone out there who isn't a grandparent, don't feel bad or old when the time comes - they are the "joie de vivre". I pray constantly for their safety and that they have a desire for God above all else.

Family life and the Marines

Adam and Salena got in late last night. He is stationed at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. We love that he gets to come home on long holiday weekends, not like when he was in California at Camp Pendleton. It is always busy, busy, busy and exhausting when they are home - especially now that they travel with their babies (Bandit and Axel) two VERY rambunctious beagles! But nothing warms this mother's heart like having her baby boy close to home.

Just set up my phone for mobile uploads :)

Happy News

Just found out from World Vision that it appears Binson is safe and unharmed from the Haitian Earthquake. Still waiting news on Lucsene from Compassion International, they had one aid worker injured and one still unaccounted for so they really need our prayers.

Off and running . . .

Here we go - I love life and sharing about mine and learning about others. Not sure what I have to offer but let's begin
